We're BACK!

It has been far too long, but the DownUnder UpOver radio program is once again hitting the airwaves in Winnipeg and live on the internet.

Our new timeslot is Wednesday from 4:00-5:30 PM. We're following in the steps of greatness taking over the slot where The In Show from Out of Nowehere was broadcast ;) Thanks Jared.

Although Lynnie is uber busy being a harried television executive, she has said that she might be able to pop by once in a while to weigh in on some of the new antipodean news and artists that I'll be playing this fall on the show.

I can't say how exciting this is. DownUnder UpOver will be making one slight modification to our tried-and-true music magazine format: we'll be including acts from Canada, the UK and the occasional commonwealth act.

Tune in and check us out in our new time slot: Wednesdays from 4-5:30 in the pee em!

We're on hiatus!

That's right folks. For those of you who have been looking for the weekly playlists for DUUO and wondering where they are ... there are none for now. Lynnie and Eugenius have decided to do something that theyhave not done in over 5 years and that is to take a full and complete holiday for the summer.

We will be experiencing a little bit of R&R and recharging the batteries so to speak. For Eugenius, this means he'll geta a chance to do some running and bike racing and actually train in between races.

As for Lynnie, she will be working as hard as ever to produce some of the best television in Canada and the world!

So, stay tuned and y'all come back in September and you'll find new playlists, a new format for the show, and a couple of seriously re-energized hosts. -gs

In case you hadn't noticed, DownUnder UpOver has moved to a new, better, bigger, faster location. We finally caved and bought our URL.The site is being hosted by the friendly folks at SynAck hosting here in sunny Winnipeg.
The new URL is http://downunderupover.com
Apparently one third of our hits come from Australia which is really cool, with the remainder coming from various places in the rest of the world.
We have recently had a tonne of new music come our way thanks to the cool people who read the nothinghappening news list run by the inimitable Craig Latham. Check out http://www.csu.edu.au/faculty/commerce/account/s-f/nh.htm

Paul Kelly is coming to Winnipeg !!!

The date I have been told is March 23.
I don't have the venue name or ticket prices as yet but as soon as I do I will post the information here.

About Paul Kelly:

Paul Kelly is one of Australia's most talented songwriter/performers. He has produced 12 critically acclaimed albums in his career to date. Paul has been performing since the early 1970's, playing hundreds of shows, touring with numerous bands and fine-tuning his skills as a solo performer across Australia, Europe, U.S.A and Canada.
Kelly has released an incredibly diverse range of material himself and for other artists, collaborating on many occasions with a multitude of prominent overseas and Australian performers.

November 21, 2001.

What we have to report this week is that I have been extremely busy. I started a new job at the end of August and it has been taking way more time than I thought it would. For those of you who care to know, I am working as digital production coordainator for a computer special fx company. The company, Frantic Films is based in Winnipeg which is totally convenient. The last big shot done by Frantic was the opening explosion sequence for the Warner Bros. blockbuster "Swordfish".

Okay, now that is the big news in terms of myself. Lynnie has been busy working on a television programme to air this December on History Television.

So, we have both been busy. That is not to say that we have been shirking our weekly duties as radio show hosts up here in the cold and windy city.
My promise is that all of the playlists I have in my posession will be inputed and posted up on the web site within 10 days of my writing this.
Just so you do know, we have lately featured the newest releases from Swerve recording artists The Little Murders, and cool indie guys Fourth Floor Collapse.

As part of the MP#Zone we have recently featured Clarisse from Australia and Jennifer Says out of New Zealand. Also, we tried something a bit different this week and are looking in to hooking up with Matt Attlee who hosts the cool web site The Aus Music Scrapbook .    Every fortnight Matt presents a section of the web site called "MP3 of the Fortnight". Since Matt has been dialled in to the pulse of the Aus music scene and writing about it since 1996, we thought it would be a good idea for us to enlist his expertise.

Anyway, that is pretty much where things stand right now. The web site is currently being redesigned by some people way more skilled than myself and will be re-launched in a bit.
In the meantime, check out the newly revamped NZ On Air web site and let 'em know what you think.

I thought I would put up a little mp3 of some drivel lynne and I say between songs. It is a small mp3 file. Yes, we sometimes trip over our tongues and occasionally we even make mistakes. Listen to the mp3 and find out just how human we are. Click here to get it. It'll only be up for a while so listen to it while you can!

PS, more linx on the NZ links page.

June06, 2001.

Yes, I know the current layout is pretty lame. A while back I changed everything to this frames style page so that the same pages would load in IE and Netscape. I am gonna add some little fancy bits but just generally make the pages more eye appealing. That is coming up though. Both Lynne and I are very busy right now. My sked will open up in a couple of weeks and I should have some re-design time. Stay tuned and keep coming back for the playlists. eneg.

March 20, 2001.

I was going through my email today and found something sent in Feb that you might want to have a read about. Perhaps you already got an email about the 2000 Darwin Awards but if not then have a look at the winners over here.

February 19, 2001.

Just a small note of clarification: A number of folks who tuned in to the Special Valentines Edition of DownUnder UpOver thought that Lynne and Eugenius were a little bit bitter about the whole thing. To set the record stright, it is only Eugenius that is bitter . Lynne seems quite content.

January 30, 2001.

All week I have been listsning to a New Zealand radio station called Vision100. It is quite amazing and the "player" for the radio station is integrated right into IE 5.

24 hours a day, 7 days a week - Vision100 broadcasts music by New Zealand artists to the web. They do it all from balmy Palmy so check them out and drop them a note to remind them how great they are!

Click on the logo to the right to listen to Vision100 right now!

Well, I was reading the National Post today (one of two Canadian national newspapers) and they had an article about a web-only news program that originates in Toronto.

December 16, 2000.

Damn but I love doing this show! For the past 6 years I have been playing and talking about music from Australia and New Zealand. It is one of those things that makes my week. No matter what crap is going on in the rest of my life this show makes it all worth while. A little while a go Lynne joined me in my endeavors to educate Canada about the amazing music from DownUnder. Soon we'll be celebrating Lynne's one year anniversary. Call us [ 204 269 8636 ] or send us an eMail and tell us what you think. We like to hear from our listeners.

For those who have forgotten, Lynne works in the film industry and her s.o. owns a movie animation house here in town. There is no relation between that info and the following link but peeps with an interest in Australian culture might want to check out this link.

December 05, 2000.

Hi all. It has been a while since I actually wrote something on this page but as you can see, the pages have been revamped. It was a proces that took a little while since the last time they were written, three different software packages were used and a lot of extra (and unnecessary) code was used.

The good news is that most everything on these pages is updated and the links are working ( I have to check some still - werk in progress ). The playlists page is current but the ones from the summer months have yet to be input by Lynne. She said she's going to get around to it since she doesn't like the look of the page with all those gaps either.

Other than that ... not much new to report. We just got a new disc from NZ On Air which includes the David Tua theme song. He lost to Lewis a while back but the song is cool so we're going to play it this week. We'll also be featuring a new piece from king Kapisi who is totally kicking it with the grooves an' rhymes downunder. Congrats to Chris knox for his recent receipt of New Zealand's most prestigious songwriting award. The APRA Silver Scroll Award for 2000 was presented to Chris Knox for his song "My Only Friend".

Other news? Check out the playlists for the current heads-up on what we're doing at DownUnder UpOver. I got rid of frames a couple of revisions ago so you can bookmark the playlist page and go straight there. Hope it's sunny where you are. OTB!gene

September 18, 2000.

Well, after a long hiatus Eugenius has finally returned to the DownUnder UpOver Program. After a summer of outdoor entertainment teaching archaeology to students (and being eaten alive by mosquitos), I'm finally back in the studio with Lynne and we're back at it.

The program is going through some changes this year with the addition of some new segments and the reincarnation of others. The most important change to take place this year is that we'll (hopefully) be producing half hour installments of DUUO that will be slightly different. Since we get so much indie stuff and (because of the way the show is currently programmed) don't have time to play all of it as much as we should, we're creating a new program that will run along with the Big Back Yard (from Australia) and be aired some time during the day when a time slot becomes available.

Other stuff:

  • Mp3Zone will be resurrected and run on a bi-weekly basis
  • Aaron Anderson (our New Zealand direct reporter) has expressed interest in making the occasional live appearance
  • more news from New Zealand
  • (and more music from NZ too)
  • currently a weekly look at the Olympic games from a musical standpoint
  • the web pages yer looking at will go through a major re-vamp

May 27, 2000.

Things will be updated relatively soon and maybe (just maybe) I'll even share some of the highlights of my trip with everyone.

Sunny here. Also warm with clear skies and a 50 percent chance of tent catepillar attacks.

April 21, 2000.

By the time you read this, the playlists from the last month should have been posted. It's been really busy with marking exams and papers but the summer should smooth things out. If you check our our recent playlists, you will notice that a lot of NEW music from New Zealand has been featured on DUUO. Our thanks and adoration go out to the folks at NZ On Air and Brendan Smyth in particular for keeping us current in the realm of NZ music.

On another note, as much as we hate to do it, even the crew needs to have some time off for r&r (read: beer). So, we're taking off to slightly warmer climes and we're going to enjoy all of the little things that life has to offer.

In reality Jacques is going to work on his PhD, and I'm going to head to Ontario for some mountain bike races and some serious training. As an aside, my friends have been procreating and I haven't yet seen some of their offspring. That's another good reason to go home. Of course the best reason of all is to see my parents and my brother whom I haven't seen in years. It'll be good to have a home cooked meal again.

While we're gone, we've arranged to play several programs from the 1999 Big Back Yard series. It has been decreed that Winnipeg shall not go more than a week without music from Australia or New Zealand, and the Big Backyard will ensure that it is so.

I hope the sun is shining where-ever you are.

DUUO returns to 101.5 FM on May 24 - just after the Victoria Day holiday (which is on the 22nd).

If anyone needs me, I really will be OTB! - Eugenius
PS - for all intents and purposes, I will be out of email contact, but if you really need to get me by email, send one to Eugenius@Canada.com or phone me at (905) 584 2696.

March 21, 2000.

There are three places on the web that you MUST check out if you are interested in music from New Zealand.

The first site you should go to is called NoiZyland.
NoiZyland is a new site put together by people in the music industry and dedicated with a capital D to the promotion of NZ music.

The second site you should have a gander at it called UploadTV.com
As you can probably guess from the name, it has to do with television - specifically music videos from NZ artists.

The third site worth spending a little bit of time at WILL BE the site at www.mp3.net.nz
The folks at mp3.net.nz are just getting the final touches done on their web site and plan to launch it on Thursday March 25.

mp3.net.nz are billing themselves as New Zealand's first comprehensive music website. Their aim is to be a virtual broadcaster and music distributor solely for music from New Zealand.

If you have the time and the interest, check out those three sites for info on NZ music. ESr.

March 11, 2000.

I uploaded the latest MP#.ZONE segment to the server. It aired on March 08, 2000 and Session 5 included music from [cell7] out of Western Australia and PINE (nz) from Christchurch.
Also, check out the website for Just For Laughs. The comedy tour is going across Canada right now and stopping in WPG from March 22 to 25th.

March 10, 2000.

Forgot to mention last update that...voila! new look for duuo

We had a new MP#.ZONE session this week and two artists. Read about it and find out where to get the music over here.
There are a bunch new links to interesting or important information in both the NZ and OZ sections. Have a look and tell me what I have missed, what shouldn't be there et cetera.
It appears (according to Rubber Records American website) as though Frenzal Rhomb are touring the West Coast of the US right now.
Other news related to music is in the latest playlist (March 08, 2000).

March 03, 2000.

On February 29, my watch thought it was March 1 - I guess it didn't recognize that it was a leap year.

Anyway, a lot has happened since I last did a news report. I'll just give you the best bits:

ANNOUNCEMENT!

DUUO has a new co-host. Her name is Lynne and she is a lost ...er make that a LOT like the original host of the program (although she could be lost too but that's another story).

Anyway, Lynne lived and drank downunder for quite a while and she misses she south pacific as much as the regular host. However, Lynne has the ability to go back and that is exactly what she is doing next week.

For six weeks, she'll be in MELBOURNE!! (not to be mistaken with another Australian city such as ..) doing whatever the hell she wants. If anyone wants to bother her by email you can do so by sending one to lynne_skromeda@hotmail.com

Indie artists and major label folks are invited to woo Lynne with whatever you think will work. Just to warn you though, she is a very smart co-host and doesn't take shit from anyone!

As you will have noticed, the web pages look different. We got rid of the frames and went to a slightly different look which will change again soon.

As many of you already know, this thing is a work in progress.

We've been a little bit behind on our MP#.ZONE segments but will restart them this coming week. I'm not sure who we're using yet but that'll be sussed out soon.

Jaqcues from Temi (short for the place he's from) is a real character and you can read about how he came to be a part of DownUnder UpOver by clicking here.

By the end of this weekend I should have a bunch more links on all of the pages.

This site will continue to use Stylesheets which make my life a lot easier.

Also, we've started to evaluate Macromedia's Dreamweaver 3 which (so far) is absolutely excellent. It is better than CoffeCup HTML and Microsoft Frontpage and slightly more user friendly than Homesite v4.5.

With this level of user friendliness, expect to see updates on the web site much sooner than in the past.

FINALLY, we are boycotting the publicist known as BeBop. They represent The Whitlams here in North America and treated us like total crap when the Whitlams came to North America. All this means is that we won't deal with the publicist. We'll still promote artists represented by them (just not through them if you get the idea - there is usually a record label rep that we can deal with). Eugenius.

February 05, 2000.

The playlists are up for January 26 and February 02 and the latest edition of MP#Zone has been posted in the MP#Zone section.

It appears that both Frenzal Rhomb and the Whitlams will be returning to Winnipeg.
Details of the two ( seperate! ) gigs go like this:

Frenzal Rhomb will be playing the Pyramid Cabaret in WPG on February 26 with Consumed, Mad Caddies and No Use for a Name.

(The FR gig is likely an all ages event and I am told that all bands are on the Fat Wreck Chords label)

The Whitlams are opening up for Blue Rodeo.
February 19 at the Walker Theatre.

January 25, 2000.

Check this out if you've ever wondered about Waltzing Matilda and where it came from.

I've added some new links to the links sections for Oz and NZ and pretty much everything we've been up to has been updated on the Playlist section.

Check them out and, as always, let me know what links I should be adding.

Props out to NZ On Air. s Music Manager, Brendan Smyth, for sending us some new Kiwi Hit Discs, as well as a couple of other treats.

This'll allow us to increase our Kiwi content a great deal (and is doubly good since he sent a couple o' indie discs too!)

That's it for now - but I'm still working on the layout. I'm not actually satisfied with the way the site looks. Somehow it doesn't flow the way I would like.

Keep visiting!  OTB!EugeniusSr.

January 18, 2000.

Hi there everyone and welcome to the year 2000.

We've all had a busy schedule over here for the last little while but now things seem to be settling down a little bit.

No too long ago we decided to use Cascading Style Sheets to handle the text and page formattig duties but apparently not all browsers deal with the style sheets the same way.

While Microsoft Intenet Explorer version 5 will handle most style sheet attributes, Netscape Navigator version 4.7 is still playing catch-up.

Also, if you are using v.3 of IE you can't see style sheets at all. As a result of this the pages are a little bit backward compliant so that if your browser supports style sheets, you'll see them and if it doesn't, you'll see default formatting.

November 27, 1999.

Attention indie bands and smaller labels!

In case you were wondering how our playlists come about, you should know that we are highly influenced by music news and events to do with the music industry in Australia and New Zealand.
In other words, we need to know what's going on as far as your band is concerned. Are you touring? Have You put out a new CD? Got signed to a new record label? That sort of information (believe it or not) is interesting to us and we need to know about it. See the section of our web pages called PROGRAM and find out why we play the music we play.

Read the MP#.Zone and DUMR sections especially!!

Finally the real web page update!
MP#.Zone is all updated. So are the playlists, as far as they exist.
There is no real change to the name of MP#.Zone except when referred to on the show.
Now it is "time for MP3'z!!!", er, something like that...

We had a bit of a contest to pick a new name but most of the submissions pretty much sucked. However, a listener named Jamie won our prize pack provided courtesy of Shock Records. He is the proud new owner of a Shock/Shagpile sampler disk, a cool Shagpile T-shirt and Frenzal Rhomb's latest offering - "A Man's Not a Camel."

Next week we do session number three of MP#.Zone and so far we're featuring New Zealand band the Letterbox Lambs. More info to come.

November 15, 1999.

MP#.Zone got a new name as far as the web is concerned. You see the problem is that I'm not a very good stenographer and I make a LOT of mistakes. So, henceforth we're calling the section MP# and leaving it at that. As far as the radio program is concerned, that's another matter.
We held a competition over the last couple of weeks and took submissions from listeners for a new name for the segment.
Finalists are:

  • Off The Web
  • OnLineMusic
  • and my favorite is simple and to the point, MP3'z

We'll let our panel of judges figure out what to call the segment later.
In the meantime, we have had two segments of the MP# program and the details of each can be found by clicking the little logo in the top left of your screen.

October 20, 1999.

1) We have added a new feature to the program called MP3 Zone. In this segment, we profile a couple or three artists whose MP3s are available on the net.
During the show we'll mention where the MP3 can be found and it will also be announced via this page what the exact URL is so those of you who can't listen to the show (for whatever reason) can hear the song. Cool, eh?

2) Two good places to find and buy Australian and New Zealand music on the internet:

The first is a New Zealand outfit known as NETCD. They have a great selection and their motto is service with a smile.
Since they operate out of NZ, foreigners get to subtract the GST (Goods and Services Tax) which is fairly substantial.
At NETCD, since their prices are in NZ dollars, those ordering from outside New Zealand could be in for quite a savings even with shipping and handling taken into consideration.

There is also CHAOS MUSIC which is a distributor out of Australia. They have a really great selection of music from far and wide and they have a section dedicated to Australian MP3s.

There is a new official INXS web site!!

The URL is http://www.INXS.com

Check it out and find out more about the chat with Tim Farris.

Also, you can find answers to a number of rumours floating about.

October 18, 1999.

A new thing we're adding - the changes that take place will be traced through this page - so you can come by once a month and  get the low-down on the changes and news schtuff.

Jebediah
They played on September 18, 1999.

Sony Music artist Jebediah
to play the Pyramid Cabaret
I don't know the ticket info - but it is sure to be cheap.
Hey, it's Winnipeg after all!

"New Zealand Direct"
Arrives in Canada!!

Aaron Anderson  and New Zealand Direct have joined the DownUnder UpOver bi-weekly schedule starting June 23. New Zealand Direct is a mix of music from NZ including brand new hits and old favorites.
Host Aaron Anderson from 1XX and Bayrock FM in Whakatane in the Bay of Plenty spins the kiwi music with an educated authority. aaron
