News links

NZMusic Dot Com
NZMUSIC.COM - all of that and that bag of salty chips you were looking fo. You'll also find music videos from some of New Zeland's best. Including some really rare stuff that you probably didn't know existed. I haven't got them to run on my computer yet but I'm working on it - apparently they are not in a MediaPlayer-friendly format.

NoizyLand
A great new resource for kiwi music lovers. NoiZyland is slick and chocka with information on the NZ music scene. MP3, CD and live stuff all gets coverage in this arena. Check 'em out!

Bands.co.NZ
Found this site the other day. Bands.co.nz  (I hadn't looked very hard for it I guess). Look at it, love it, tell them they are cool.

Buying Music

CDSTAR is yet another place for you to buy music on the internet. I haven't tried them out (ie. purchasing anything from them) but their web site is easy to use and has a lot of indie stuff too.

I have dealt with the folks at SmokeCDs.com and their service is great - even to Canada :)
This is a NewZealand company that is well worth checking out if you want to get some great deals on music from NewZealand and Australia.

www.CDKIWI.com
A great site for indie and major label music from New Zealand. Frequent updates and a useable layout.
NET CD
If you are in America or anywhere that has a good exchange rate relative to the NZ Dollar, you can get some great deals from this online retailer. Expect to pay around $20-25 Canadian for a title including shipping and handling. AND you don't pay the GST!

Teledu Records
Teledu Records is a virtual store specialising in harder-to find New Zealand music and independent releases from around the world. It used to be the web site for the store but store has gone away and everything is mailorder now. Lotsa good stuff here.

RADIO NEW ZEALAND
Have a realtime listen to radio in NZ. Radio New Zealand is meant to "provide innovative, comprehensive and independent broadcasting services of a high standard". Whatever, have a look at what the NZ government is spending money on. Not bad.

petra jane is a nerd who likes music, photography, orange lollipops, good coffee .... you get the picture.
Check out her web site for some excellent photos of antipodean acts such as the Hasselhoff Experiment and the Datsuns (she is in to leser-known kiwi bands). The site also has a section dedicated to ANTIROCK which is aimed at exposing the 'great unknowns' of New Zealand music. Petra features profiles of bands from across New Zealand.
kiwibird KIWI EXPERIENCE
If you are a traveller, there are a number of ways to get around New Zealand. You can hitch, drive a car, ride a bike, take a train or bus or, if you're adventurous, you can take the Kiwi Experience and meet cool people while you travel.
BULLS BUS TERMINAL was one of the greatest sources for information on New Zealand music on the net. Also known as the New Zealand music linkup, creator Jono Milne has done a great job of putting together these pages.
The original server location is down apparently but the mirror link is still functioning.
These days Jono isn't maintaining the pages but there are still links that will get you where you want to go.

Record Labels and Bands

Yelloweye Records outta Dunedin New Zealand is focused on local acts and anyone south of the Bombay Hills. The label is pretty much a hobby for those involved but has some great musicians on-board.
Acts on their roster include She's Insane, Brouhaha, Cynthia Should and Funhouse.
THE ARC CAFE is a Cafe in New Zealand that is interested in fostering new music. It was formed in June 1997 in Dunedin on the south island of New Zealand. They have a lot to offer travellers and locals alike from genuine free internet to ground level culture. Have a visit in the summer months and skip out on the icky weather.

MARITAL MUSIC or Muse Records
Damian Binder, Rod Bridgman and more - a member of the NZ Indie Music Association
THE STEREO BUS
There is something new from The Stereo Bus. The second disc from these guys is called Brand New amd it rocks out big.
While members of the band often call their music "sissy pop" it really does go off sometimes!
We know the pedigree of the band is good - (members of the Muttonbirds and JPSE).
Find out more about this band and visit their website.
FLYING NUN is perhaps the longest running and most well known label coming out New Zealand. They have bands on their roster such as the Bats, the Chills, the Clean and Tall Dwarfs. Newer artists on the scene include Fiona McDonald, The D4, The Subliminals, and did I mention Chris Knox!?!
