NEWS:
* This March Eskimo Joe will release a new single called 'From
the Sea', on Festival Mushroom Records. The single is from their forthcoming
sophomore album slated for a mid 2004 release.
* The total of Australian and New Zealand artists showcasing at SXSW has
now reached 20.
* Something For Kate's debut album "Elsewhere For 8 Minutes"
(released back in July 1997) is certified gold (35,000 units).
* A report in the "New Zealand Herald" says that a number of
NZ acts had a bit of success during the recent MIDEM trade fair in France.
Martin Phillipps & The Chills, David Kilgour, Blindspott
and 50 Hz have all secured distribution deals in Europe and the US.
Fat Freddy's Drop scored a booking agent for North America and are negotiating
with a large UK indie called Intergalatic Records that represents 8 Foot
Sativa and Mama Said. They also have did a blanket deal with a European
distributor to release in 35 territories. Goldenhorse have piqued interest
from Australia, Germany and the U.S. and The Have may sign a licensing
deal with a German label and could have a track on a soundtrack by videogame
giant EA Games.
* In an somewhat related story, David Kilgour has a new solo LP
coming out later in the year on Merge Records in the US. The NZ release
is still to be confirmed. The album was recorded in Nashville last year.
David Kilgour and The Heavy Eights will be playing three shows in Dunedin,
Christchurch and Wellington in the coming months.
* Several NZ artists including Nathan Haines, One Million Dollars
and Christchurch funk outfit P-Bass Expressway are recieving radioplay
in the US on the Groove
Boutique. The Groove Boutique is hosted by DJ Rafe Gomez and played
in a variety of major cities in the US. The show is officially in the
Top 5 Saturday night radio shows played in New York City.
