the news
* Rock and rollers The Datsuns have ended the bidding war for their first
full-length album by signing a record deal for the UK and Europe with
V2 Records. The Datsuns are currently polishing off their album at London's
Rak Studios and will return to New Zealand for a little r&r and a New
Zealand tour before heading back to the UK in August to tour extensively
in support of the album's release. see http://www.thedatsuns.com
for more.
* Wellington band Marystaple celebrate the release of their debut EP
'Reset Speed' this week. The first single is "Newdog" and check out http://www.marystaple.com
for more.
* The APRA awards were held on Monday June 3 at the Sydney Regent Hotel
Ballroom.
Song of the year went to Alex Lloyd for "Amazing" and songwriter of the
year was new mum Kasey Chambers.
* Memorable live performances included George, who'd been playing in
WA the night before, flew into Sydney at 7.30, had a quick dinner in their
rooms, and delivered a powerful set at quarter to 11. Neil Finn did "Turn
And Run" accompanied by Jodi Phillis (the Clouds) on backing vocals. Finn
knew he wanted a backup vocalist, had heard that Phillis had performed
his "Don't Dream It's Over" at the awards last year, and sent her a tape.
* Regurgitator member Ben Ely has another project, at this stage under
the name XXX. Other members include Peter Kostic (Regurgitator, Front
End Loader) & Ray Ahn (Hard Ons, Nunchukka Superfly). The band will
have an EP out independently later in the year, with an east coast tour
around August.
* Grinspoon's long awaited third album "New Detention" is out this week
through Universal. The first single off the set, "Chemical Heart" was
the band's most played track on radio and was No. 1 for 13 weeks on JJJ's
Net 50.
* We just got the Vines CD into the office. The band formed in early
2001 and was signed to indie label EngineRoom. By the end of the year
EngineRoom had recorded the bands debut album and concluded a deal for
the world ex-Australia with Capitol Records. A short while ago, Engine
Room finalised the global alliance with Capitol by signing a license deal
with EMI Australia for The Vines.
