the news
* Western Australia should be feeling pretty good about itself and support
of national bands. The free Yac It Up at Point Walter Reserve on March
24 with Spiderbait, On Inc, Downsyde, Gryoscope, The Fergusons and 10
other local artists drew 8,000 people, and the March 10 free COSmonautical
event on Scarborough Beach with One Dollar Short, Gyroscope, Autopilot,
Heavyweight Champ, Times Up & Rollerskates drew 7,000 people.
* Midnight Oil are coming to Canada and will be playing at the Walker
Theatre in Winnipeg onMay 19. Prior to that they will head the Fierce
Festival, which is being held to showcase Australian acts. Other bands
playing include Spiderbait, Regurgitator, Gerling, Magic Dirt and the
Meanies.
* Reports have it that Sneeze/Godstar/Smudge/120 mins will be touring
Spain/Europe/UK in July. Godstar and Smudge are the other
bands of Sneeze members Nic Dalton and Tom Morgan.
* Lazy 8 are a Melbourne indy band. They took 15 months to record their
first EP with Cal Orr (Sandpit, Even) and co-produced by Tim O'Connor
(ex-Frente). Their music is dreamy with jangly guitar.
* Auckland band Steriogram have become the subject of controversy surrounding
the upcoming New Zealand Music Awards. They have been named as finalists
for the new Best Hip-Hop/R&B Award. The nomination was withdrawn
by Awards organisers RIANZ. The band themselves are surprised by the nomination,
but there are some in hip-hop circles who have taken things much more
seriously. Steriogram, in the meantime, have been busily plugging away
on an extensive nationwide high schools tour. Visit
http://www.steriogram.com for full tour dates.
New Zealand Music Month of May is upon us and while the news from NZ
was a little bit light I felt that it would be cool to have a look at
some of the less-played bands from Aotearoa. Thanks NZ On Air for their
continued support next week a NZOA supported NZ music special!
The annual NZ Music Awards, the Tuis, will be held at Auckland's St James
complex on Friday May 10th, and the same venue will host the monstrous
three day True Colours festival to wrap up the month, with the Finn brothers
Neil and Tim playing host to guests including Dave Dobbyn on Friday 31
May, a massive all ages gig headlined by Pacifier on Saturday 1 June,
and Flying Nun's 21st Anniversary gig on Sunday 2 June. Find out more
