Hi all,
The new year is here and I'm only one week behind in doing this stuff :)
Lynne and I did a bit of a 2001 in review and the music we played tends to emphasize the heavy hitters of the Australian and New Zealand music scene. This is due in part to the sources we use to gather the news and ... well that's the whole reason the playlist came out the way it did. Apologies to the NZ musicians who don't get a very fair shake this time around. We'll see what we can do to fix the slight for next week.

I would like to offer a big round of applause to Western Australia's Fourth Floor Collapse who not only put out a stellar album "Half Deserted Streets", but also got recognized at the ARIA's last year for their web site and their recording.

Bed music for tonight's program came from the super amazing Loop Recrdings Aot(ear)oa disc "Gathering 2002" which includes tracks from The Black Seeds, Shapeshifter, Pitch Black and more.

Artist - Track (Label)

  • Frenzal Rhomb - never had so much fun (Shock Records)
  • Powderfinger - my happiness (Polydor)
  • You am I - Damage (Mushroom)
  • Pnau, Journey Agent (Warner)
  • The Resin Dogs, Hardgroove (EMI)
  • The Avalanches, Frontier Psychiatrist (Modular)

On January 26 2002 (Australia Day) JJJ will count down the hottest 100 songs of 2001 as voted by JJJ listeners all over the worl.
This year Fourth Floor Collapse have made it into the voting list with 'Made Believe'.

  • Margaret Urlic, Nature (EMI)

The terrible news that Sir Peter Blake was murdered came to us as an utter shock. Thanks to Aaron Anderson for providing us sounds clips from the America's Cup. We couldn't wind up the year without a mention of the tragedy that befell NZ and the Blake family and felt it would be appropriate to play the Split Enz track that the Finn brothers performed at the request of Sir Peter Blake's family.

  • Split Enz, Six Months in a leaky boat (A&M)

Looking forward into 2002 the NZMusic site http://www.nzmusic.com, has a poll for which band will have the biggest release for the upcoming year. On the list are Betchadupa, Rubicon, Shihad, Tadpole, Bic Runga and Trinity Roots.
We finished off the night with Tadpole and a brand new one from them that came to us courtesy of the folks at NZ on Air.

  • Tadpole, Nothing New (Antenna Recordings)

That's all for now.
