Playlist for January 24, 2001

Hi all, This week we did a special program celebrating Australia Day on January 26th.

The Aussie's on this list know the details:
Australia Day is the day set aside to commemorate the arrival of Captain Arthur Philip and the First fleet at Sydney Cove on 26th January, 1788.
Captain Philip proclaimed the area that became the colony of New South Wales to be a British possession.
The landing marked the first permanent European settlement on the island continent.

An interesting note: it wasn’t until 1994 that all States and Territories started celebrating Australia Day on the actual day.

We began the evening with a stunning instrumental rendition of the Australian National Anthem “Advance Australia Fair”

We followed that up with a song probably introduced a lot of non-Aussies to the word vegemite.

artist - track (label)

  • Men at Work, Downunder (Sony)
  • Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Red Right Hand (Reprise)
  • Rolf Harris, Tie Me Kangaroo Down (indie)
  • Paul Kelly, From St Kilda to Kings Cross (Mushroom)
  • Hunters and Collectors, Throw Your Arms Around Me (Mushroom)
  • Cordrazine, Memorial Drive (Rubber Records)

It was a year ago tonight that Lynne first came into the Downunder UpOver studios to say “hi”.
According to the legend, hearing the H&C track “Throw Your Arms Around Me” was a significant turning point. It might be the key to the current success being garnered by DUUO. The song (released in Canada in 1987 on IRS) is what led Lynne to meet the mysterious radio programmer responsible for Downunder UpOver (or something like that 8«).

Weddings Parties Anything have been a favorite of mine for a long time and one cassette (and now CD) that has seen a lot of play at home is “The Big Don’t Argue”
We took a bit of liberty in playing a seven minute song but it was definitely worth it.

  • Weddings Parties Anything, A Tale they Won’t Believe (WEA)
  • Burl Ives, Waltzing Mathilda (mp3)
  • Yothu Yindi, Mabo (Mushroom Records)
  • Kev Carmody, From big things little things grow (indie)

Kev Carmody was touring around Canada last sumemr and Lynne saw him play and his stuff is really great. A must check out for anyone interested in independent Australian music. Finally, we played the audio portion of a cartoon called Maccastrewth.
If you are a true aussie or interested in a really funny animated short (5 minutes long), check out Atomfilms.com and have look up Maccastrewth. You won’t be disappointed.

Next week DUUO tackles Waitangi day and will be playing a full hour of NZ music.
