DUUO - February 21, 2001

This week we were all over the map (as usual). Lotsa news this week about
great music from Oz and NZ and a special NZ Music Awards 2001
preliminary report from our NZ Direct reporter Aaron Anderson in Whakatane.

We started off with one of those bands that verges on rockabilly (but don't go
all the way). The Anyones are working on material for a new album right now
as a followup to the album Lonerider. In the meantime the band is gigging
around a bit. On March 9 they play with Youth Group at The Evelyn in
Melbourne and then they head to Sydney on March 16 & 17 to play a couple
gigs with Magic Dirt at the Annandale.

Artist, Track (Label)

  • The Anyones, Orange Bubble Gum (Shock)
  • 28 Days, Sucker (Shock)
  • The Resin Dogs, Say Yeah ((Hypnofunk))

We only played a bit of Kiwi content tonight and featured the first part of
Aaron Anderson's Look at the Kiwi Music Awards (aka the Tuis). The full
listing of nominees for the various categories is available on the DownUnder
UpOver Web Site ( http://go.to/duuo ). Both Eye TV and Fur Patrol were
nominated in the Single of the Year category.

  • Eye TV, One Day Ahead (Antenna Records)
  • The Whitlams, Blow Up The Pokies (Phantom)

Greta Gertler co-wrote "Blow Up The Pokies." While the song was a hit for
the Whitlams, Gertler was in New York, writing, eating bagels, recording and
doing gigs in Manhattan's Lower East Side. She is returning from New York
to Sydney and will launch a new EP at the Harbourside Brasserie on
Thursday April 5.

Brisbane's Palladium are joining the Superjesus tour, which runs from
February 21. We don't have anything from Palladium right now so we went
with a new track (to us anyway) from the Superjesus. We followed that up
with a track that got a lot of attention from listeners here in Canada and
preceded the song with a review written by one of Lynne's friends who
recently saw the Avalanches play in Melbourne.

  • The Superjesus, Gravity (EastWest)
  • The Avalanches, Frontier Psychiatrist (Modular)
  • Madison Avenue, Who the Hell Are You (EMI)
  • Pre-Shrunk, Gamer (BlackYak)

D&B outfit Pre-Shrunk have hit the road on their "A Bass Odyssey" tour,
previewing new songs like "Gamer" and their next single "Frogga Boogaga":

  • Fur Patrol, Lydia (Warner)
  • Powderfinger, My Happiness (Universal/Polydor)

As mentioned above, Fur Patrol and their song Lydia are nominated for
single of the year in the TUIS. The Powderfingre song we played simply
because I am happy right now.

And that about wraps it up.
Next week more from the nominees for the TUIS.

Thanks heaps to Aaron Anderson from New Zealand Direct, the kind folks at
New Zealand On Air and IMMEDIA!'s Christie Eliezer.
