February 14th 2001 (Valentines Day)

Well everyone, tonight we at duuo presented our Valentines Special Edition.

Lynne and I dug through our collections and came up with a tonne of tracks about love, and the various facets of love including the ugly bits that we tend to toss into the closet and forget about (or try to forget about).

Love pulls on our emotional heartstrings (of course). When we first encounter a new love is makes us feel good, even great. But for all of the happiness it can bring, love has the potential to tear us apart. I guess it is just a way for the universe to even itself out. While you might be up one day and down the next, someone else is probably going through the exact opposite.

We can’t all be happy all of the time. That is why love was invented and, that is why the greeting card companies created Valentines day - to remind us that we are human, we have emotions, and they can be screwed with. Oh, and in some cases so that we can tell that special someone “I love you.”

That’s my rant. Below you will find a selection of songs about love and loss and the emotions that go along with relationships. Enjoy.

Artist, Track (label)

  • The Verlaines , this valentine (slash)
  • Garageland, lovesong (Flying Nun)
  • Handsome Geoffrey, I sort of love you (indie NZ)

Ahhh, Handsome Geoff really do hit the nail on the head there don’t they. I sort of love you … like a best friend … or a brother maybe *sigh*   I’ve heard that one before.

Next up we started with something from Custard.  I would say I have found myself saying this as a bit of a mantra some days J

  • Custard, girls like that don’t go for guys like us (BMG)
  • The Whitlams, No Aphrodesiac/machine gun fellatio mix (Phantom) * for all of the lonely hearts
  • Weddings Parties Anything, if you were a cloud (WEA) * a song that holds a special place in my little dark heart

Every week we are required to play a disclaimer before the show (in case anyone uses some naughty language). This week it turned out to be a good thing because of the next song on our list. A bit more on the dance side of the track, Lynne was not joking when she said this was a good one.

  • Friendly, I love you but, (unknown)
  • Jebediah, Please Leave (murmur/sony)
  • Exponents, Like she said (Sony)
  • Rob Snarskie and Matt Walker, If you don’t want my love (W. Minc)
  • You Am I, Heavy Heart (Ra Records)
  • The Feelers, Venus (Warner)

Finally we finished off the Valentines Special Edition of downunder upover with a track coming from Single Gun Theory. Probably my all-time favorite from this crew.

  • Single Gun Theory, Motherland (Nettwerk)

See y’all next week
